Hidden Springs O-Meet Sunday, January 24 OR January 31

Mark your calendar!  Mark it in pencil. Due to the unpredictability of weather and ground conditions it might be necessary to change the date. We will make every effort to host a safe and fun meet on schedule, however orienteering at Hidden Springs is no an indoor event.
Please join us on Sunday, January 24 or our backup date Sunday, January 31, for an orienteering meet in a format to fit the weather and footing. Because Hidden Springs' diverse terrain allows flexibility in course setting come snow, rain or shine, Hidden Springs is especially suitable for a winter meet. If the trails are firm and snow does not render the hills hazardous, we will set courses that include mountainous terrain. If the conditions don't favor travel in the hills, we will set an urban orienteering course.

Because of the forecast for more precipitation and moderate temperatures there is a high probability of an urban style meet. In order to make the best use of the urban area we plan to have a Motala course. A Motala consists of multiple loops, in this case 3 or 4. Each participant will receive a package of 3 or 4 maps with each of the courses beginning and ending at the same location. That means we have to print a lot of maps. So that we can make a reasonable estimate for printing, please RSVP by Thursday to jnm2870@Cableone.net . We will print a few extra maps because somebody will have an unexpected opportunity to participate, but when we run out, that's it.

There will be an email update on the final plan by Friday night. Also, you can check the CTOC blog for an update on Friday or Saturday before the meet.

When: January 24. Registration is planned to begin at 9:00 am and to continue to 10:00 am. However, registration and course openings could be  earlier to allow us to use the frozen trails and hills before they thaw into mud. Courses will be open for starts 9:30 am – 10:30 am. Courses close at noon. You may arrive within the registration window to try a course, as participants start separately a few minutes apart. If we run a Motala, all participants will start at the same time.

Start/Finish Location:
SUBJECT to CHANGE--To be announced on FridayFormat: To be determined depending on conditions

Single meet (day) dues: $10 per person/team, free for members Single Junior (up to 20 years old): $5 per person/team, free for members If more than one map is needed for a team, a small additional fee may be needed depending on printing costs.
CTOC membership:
Regular $45 (pays for all local meets).
Family $65 (pays for all local meets).

Things to bring:
1. your trusty compass, or you may rent one from the club for a nominal fee.
2. a signed waiver, to save you some time signing up when you get there - but we will have blanks handy. Waivers and membership forms are available at http://ctoc-boise.blogspot.com/

If weather permits a meet in the hills, the terrain will not be suitable for a beginner's course.

See you on January 24!

December Sprint Relay Results!

Well outside of the preferable time frame for posting results, but here nonetheless...

Despite a few raised eyebrows at the idea of a mass start, the "crowd" (yes, 15 for a Dec meet on the first day of winter Break counts as a crowd) thinned out pretty quickly and groupings on the course were generally entirely intentional.  It bears noting that the only official relay team in December's Sprint Relay was the Jeff/Jay duo; the other teams just couldn't bear to let their partners venture out in search of the 63 (!) controls without them! Despite Jeff and Jay each benefitting from a 12+ minute intermission, Sergey managed to nab the fastest split on each loop.

If you're looking to meet your annual control quota next year be sure not to miss out on this control binge next December!

As can be expected, Jeff Black posted some fun shots from the day in the CTOC Yahoo album.  Much obliged.

Special thanks also to Natalie and Zach for helping with control placement, and to all who hung around to pick controls up. (I'm headed over to get the final one at East JH that somehow slipped through the cracks...)

Hopefully I'll see you all in Hidden Springs soon!
